KIRA YOUNG

DVSA - Approved Driving Instructor Covering Hinkley and Nuneaton, Warwickshire.

What did I do before becoming a driving instructor?

I worked for Aldi for 5 years after just turning 18, building on my confidence and people skills.
I then moved to Leicestershire Police as a Community support officer. After completing a year in the police I wanted to move into something where I could work 1-1 with people, giving them a life-skill in return.

Why did I become a driving instructor?

I wanted to become an instructor to give people confidence and comfort on the road. Unfortunately, I had awful experiences with my instructors, so I wanted to show people that not everyone is like that! I also struggled a lot with my confidence and anxiety on the road, so I pride myself in working with people to overcome these worries so they go on to be safe and confident drivers.

What do I enjoy about training people?

I love meeting new people, finding things in common, learning about their hobbies and what they do for work. I also enjoy giving people the life skill of driving and giving them the independence, and in some cases, the chance to move on in their careers (a license being a requirement for a job). I still feel super proud and emotional when they pass their test, I feel that feeling will never change for me.

What's your favourite car?

I love cars, so I have a few favourites. My ‘sensible’ favourite would be a Ford Ranger raptor, I love big cars and I’ve always wanted a ranger, but would be worried as to where I’d park! My dream car would be either a Nissan GTR or a Ford Mustang GT, it’s a hard pick between them as I love them equally.

What do I do when I'm not in the driving seat?

I have a horse and a little boy, so I have my hands full! I also am about to finish my 5th year of university studying BA Hons in Criminology and Law. So I have a lot to keep me going, but I do love just spending time with my little boy and doing things he enjoys.

What's my pet hate in the Road?

I hate rude and impatient people on the road. People forget that they had to learn once too. I feel everyone should give learners the room and time they need people should show an example of how we should all treat each other on and off the road.

What's my favourite holiday destination?

I love the seaside, Cornwall is probably one of my favourite places in the UK. I’ve been a few times and it’s beautiful every time I go.
I also adore Germany in the Christmas period.

Surprising fact about me?

When I was younger we had a pet piglet, he lived alongside us all until he got too big. He then went to a children’s animal farm and became a bit of a local celebrity!
